Server Room vs Data Center: Key Differences
A server room is typically a dedicated space within an office building housing IT equipment for a single organization, usually under 1,000 square feet. A data center is a purpose-built facility with redundant power, cooling, and connectivity serving multiple tenants or large enterprise needs. Server rooms generally have Tier I or II reliability, while data centers target Tier III or IV uptime standards.
Technical Specifications
Performance Standards
| Grounding Standard | TIA-607-C |
| Recommended Temperature | 64-75°F (ASHRAE A1) |
| Humidity Range | 40-60% relative humidity |
| Minimum Ceiling Height | 9 feet recommended |
| Rack Anchoring | Seismic rated for California Zone 4 |
Server Room Grounding Requirements
TIA-607 specifies telecommunications grounding and bonding requirements. A Telecommunications Main Grounding Busbar (TMGB) connects to the building's electrical service ground. Telecommunications Grounding Busbars (TGB) in each telecom room bond equipment racks, cable trays, and pathway systems. Bonding conductors must be minimum #6 AWG copper with maximum 23 ohm resistance to earth ground.
