Cat6 vs Cat6a: What's the Difference?
Cat6 cable supports 10GBASE-T speeds up to 55 meters with 250 MHz bandwidth using unshielded twisted pair (UTP). Cat6a (augmented Category 6) extends 10 Gbps support to the full 100-meter channel distance with 500 MHz bandwidth. Cat6a provides superior alien crosstalk (AXT) performance through tighter twist rates and often shielded construction (F/UTP or U/FTP).
Technical Specifications
Performance Standards
| Cat6 Bandwidth | 250 MHz |
| Cat6a Bandwidth | 500 MHz |
| 10GBASE-T Distance (Cat6) | 55 meters maximum |
| 10GBASE-T Distance (Cat6a) | 100 meters full channel |
| Termination Standard | T568A or T568B per customer spec |
When to Choose Cat6a Over Cat6
Select Cat6a when installing cables longer than 55 meters that require 10 Gbps speeds, in environments with high electromagnetic interference, or when future-proofing for 25GBASE-T applications. The larger cable diameter (approximately 0.3 inches vs 0.25 inches) requires larger conduit and pathway planning but delivers measurably better signal integrity.
Our Installation Process
- Site Survey: We assess your facility, document existing infrastructure, and identify pathway requirements for cable routing.
- System Design: Our engineers create detailed drawings specifying cable types, quantities, pathway methods, and termination locations.
- Professional Installation: Certified technicians install cables following manufacturer specifications and TIA standards.
- Testing & Certification: Every cable is tested using Fluke DSX CableAnalyzer with results documented in a permanent test report.
- Documentation Package: You receive as-built drawings, cable schedules, test results, and warranty information.
